Sustainability seems to be ranking rather high on the agendas of most businesses in the UK and around the world as more businesses encourage members of staff to go green by cycling to work. The latest to follow this new trend is BUPA. While it would be willing to provide employees with bikes at 31 – 41 percent lower than the market price, will they also be willing to pay all extra bike insurance claims for their employees? A pertinent question, considering the current rise in the trend of bike theft which seems inevitable owing to the rise in bike ownership across the UK.
An experiment conducted by More Than insurance found that bike thieves are now working efficiently in order to get more bikes in less time. The experiment that left bikes unlocked and unattended in a number of cities across England, found that the average time for a thief to move in on the bike was just 2 hours. The average time for an unattended bike to get stolen in London was just 17 minutes. It is also estimated that a bike is stolen in the UK at the rate of 1 minute and 45 seconds per bike, amounting to a staggering 300,000 bikes per year.
