At least 1,200 motorists have been caught out by a speed camera in Lancashire for breaking the limit in the last three weeks.
A local news source the Burnley and Pendle Citizen has reported that there has been a seven-fold increase in the amount being paid out in penalties by drivers compared to the average amount from previous years.
Reports also suggest that road convictions can see motorists struggle to pick up a car or bike insurance policy the next time they come to renew.
This is because cover firms could view them as a risk and decide that they are more likely to have an accident. According insurance experts, this, may result in insurers increasing prices in response.
Claire Armstrong, co-founder of Safe Speed, believes motorists should be made more aware that cameras are in operation in certain areas.
She said: “If the cameras are catching such a large number of drivers then maybe the local Highways Agency needs to re-enforce the signage around the camera to warn about the reduction in the speed limit.”
Meanwhile, the Argus has reported that drivers in Sussex can opt to take a £105 road awareness course rather than pick up a ban from the road.
