Motorbikes, mopeds and scooters from today will be allowed to share red route bus lanes with buses, cyclists and black taxis in hope to ease congestion.
The new rule is part of an 18 month trial and was proposed after following a three-year study in which motorcyclists used the bus lane in Brixton Road and Finchley Road.
This new road rule could have a positive effect on bike insurance, because the number of bike accidents and other road collisions fell by 42%.
However, 4,000 people have signed a petition against the move, fearing for the safety of cyclists and London Cycling Campaign will hand out leaflets to cyclists in Hyde Park warning them of the new rules.
The mayor of London said that he will reconsider the move after 18 months, Mr Johnson said: “I am determined to make it easier to get from A to B in our great city…One of the ways we can ease congestion is by encouraging people to get on their bike, whether pedal or powered.”
Those without bike insurance are urged to purchase the policy in the event of an accident or theft.
