Motorcyclists are being advised to ensure that they have adequate bike insurance as the number of bike thefts are expected to increase during the summer.
According to AA Insurance, as the popularity for bikes increases during the recession, the number of bikes on Britain's roads is expected to soar during the summer, making it easier for bike thieves.
According to the AA, cycle theft is found to be at its highest during June and October compared to any other time of year.
Simon Douglas, the director of the insurance provider, warned motorcyclists of the importance of ensuring their vehicle is covered for bike theft, as the firm expects a "Himalayan peak in cycle theft" as more people replace their four wheels for two, as a cheaper option.
He said: "We could see a Himalayan peak in cycle theft this summer as the recession makes the bike an ever more sought-after item."
The warning was issued after, the Tory leader David Cameron had his bike stolen for the second time in just ten months.
Douglas said: "While we sympathise with Mr Cameron's well-publicised plight, hundreds of cyclists fall victim to theft every day."
"This episode reinforces the need to check your insurance to make sure your bike is included."
