Cycle thefts are expected to rise this month in Cambridge, it has been revealed. On account of the thousands of students who will be attending university with their bikes this month, the figures for cycle thefts is expected to soar. Substantiating this claim is Cambridge news that has stated that October is the worst month for cycle thefts.
Things will only get worse before they get better on the cycle theft front this year with the arrival of approximately 30,000 university students. Between the months of January and July this year there were a total of 1433 cycles stolen.
In the year 2006, 300 bikes were stolen from Cambridge in the month of October, compared to the month of April in the same year where the figure stood at 140. This figure escalated in the April 2007 and April 2008 to 170. Although the figures for the month of October dropped to 225 bikes last year, it is expected to be a record high for this year. This is because of the figures of bike thefts in the other months, which are at an all time high.
The city councilor for Cambridge, Lewis Herbert has initiated the provision of more secure areas for bikers to park their bikes and expressed much concern about the situation.
Students are also being advised to ensure they have adequate bike insurance to ensure they are covered in the event of falling victim to bike theft.
