Bikers in Cambridge are being asked to step up their safety measures as a result of rising incidents of bike thefts in the area.
The authorities in the region are asking owners of two wheelers and bicycles alike to make markings on their bikes, as doing this might come to their aid in the event of a theft.
It has been alleged that the increasing amount of thefts in the region is because of opportunistic thieves who target bikes belonging to new students. These students come to Cambridge to cycle, making them easy targets for bike thieves.
As a result, the city councillor for Cambridge has issued orders for safer parking bays in the area. He also expressed his concerns about the thefts.
He said that he was very worried about the rising number of thefts this autumn and also the high figures of theft all through the year.
In addition to making markings on their bike, many bike owners were told to step up a bike insurance policy.
Many who do not have bike insurance are advised to get cover should they fall prey to bike theft in the region. The statistics from the area indicate that there was a 15 percent rise in bike thefts, for the month of October.
