Cyclists living in London have been advised to purchase bike insurance, after a surge in burglaries across the city has occurred.

According to the Metropolitan Police, courts are charging thieves and then letting them go.

This is a problem, as it puts innocent citizens at risk as criminals return to society with a ‘nothing to lose’ mentality and will often revert back to their old ways, said Sir Paul Stephenson, the police commissioner.

He stated: “It is clear to me that when a burglar is caught and charged and knows he is going to go to prison because of previous convictions there is not a lot to lose between charge and conviction.

“That is when we see significant activity by people accused of burglary because there is nothing to lose if they know they are going to go down.”
