A bike insurance group has urged bikers to remember personal safety when on the roads this winter.
The firm warned customers of the dangers on untreated roads this Christmas.
As the weather makes a turn for the worst, the insurer has recommended bikers to keep to the main roads and avoid taking shortcuts on non-gritted roads to avoid a road accident.
The group issued a poll of 1,000 motorbike insurance customers and found that 77% of bikers dread driving during the winter months with their biggest concerns being ice on the roads (31%) as it affects grip, accelerating, cornering, braking and lean angles.
The poll also showed that 28% of bikers were concerned about salt on the road as it can adhere to the bike forming a corrosive coating which can cause erosion. It also reduces visibility by leaving a residue on visors.
Anthony Aronin, Head of insurance commented: “Driving during the winter months can be particularly treacherous with unpredictable and dangerous driving conditions such as snow and ice. With a potential shortage of gritting salt this winter, roads could be more vulnerable to a lengthy freeze. We urge all bikers to take extra care during the icy weather and stick to the main roads where possible.
“Some bikers will see riding through winter as a challenge and a way to hone their skills and get a better feeling for the handling aspects of their bike as well as the grip. It forces better bike control which will automatically make them a better rider.”
