Students residing in the Cambridge region have been advised to purchase bike insurance after it was revealed that Cambridge is the UK’s bike crime capital.
The news is not particularly shocking, especially as reports for bike crime has steadily increased over the years and a famous model got her bike stolen from the region only last month.
The study by Cambridgeshire County Council, exposed that almost 2,500 bikes are taken in the city each year, which works out at around 21 thefts per 1,000 people. Furthermore, the figures mean that one bicycle is stolen in Cambridge every three-and-a-half hours.
Simon Nuttall, from the Cambridge Cycling Campaign, urged consumers to safeguard their bikes: “People need to make sure that when they lock their bikes, they lock it to something, so they can get the lock around the frame of the bike and through an immovable obstacle.”
