Bike Insurance - Bike cover vital in the UK

When asked about why people buy bike insurance, people quote the same conventional reasons. These reasons relate to theft and damage.

However, there is one more reason for you to buy bike insurance. The authorities in the UK are resorting to very drastic measures for those who ride their bikes without insurance.

If caught riding rashly, the authorities have a right to confiscate your bike from you. Once confiscated, you have a time period of a week to produce your insurance papers before your bike gets crushed.

There are a number of other reasons to buy bike insurance

The greatest reason to buy bike insurance if you love the bike you ride is that it is a form of cover that is only dedicated to your bike solely. What this means is that it will cover your bike no matter where you go.

There is no doubt that your bike is prone to theft in the UK, however, you cannot discount the occurrence of other contingencies such as accidents. If the accident occurs outside the UK, then it is more than likely that the general cover that you had on your bike previously will be null and void.

The disadvantage of putting your bike under home contents

There are many people who choose to have their bikes insured under home contents. While this might prove sufficient to show the authorities if you are caught for negligent riding - what will you do in the occasion of theft or damage?

Under a house contents scheme, you may choose to have your bike as content, but what happens if your bike is away from home and an accident occurs?

Bike insurance revs up

Here is where a special bike insurance cover comes into the picture. A home contents scheme will only protect a bike that is worth £200 or less.

In the case of a specialist bike insurance scheme you can choose the amount, the price of add-ons and accessories, as well as a number of other things that are part of the overall price of the bike. Irrespective of where the bike may be and wherever you may choose to ride it, your bike will be protected.

Some simple rules to follow in order to protect your bike

Protecting your bike is not just about keeping it locked. Protecting your bike in terms of bike insurance means keeping it in the exact same manner you first kept your bike before your insurer.

In general insurers have advised that bike owners ideally should keep the bike in a well lit area that is visible to you and your family. Keep the bike locked with a premium grade lock and preferably keep your bike inside a garage or a special area if your house has one.

If you intend to find out more about bikes and bike insurance in general, you should look for bike insurance topics on the internet and read up on them from time to time.
