Bike Insurance - Bike insurance and the factors determining the price you pay

The important thing to remember about bike insurance is that there are a number of factors that go into determining the price you pay for your bike insurance.

These factors generally include statistics and should be controllable by you if you want a lower rate of premium.

Here are some of the factors based on which bike insurance premiums may be determined.

Type and style of your bike:

If you own a bike that is of a variety that provides greater safety as compared to others, then the premiums you pay will be reduced greatly. A sports bike is a recreational type of bike that people ride at greater speeds. Greater speed means greater risk. Greater risks will invariably bring higher premium amounts.

Age and sex of the rider:

An older more experienced man is likely to ride more efficiently as compared to a young and inexperienced rider. Women are also said to be safer drivers than men, and as a result, are offered cheaper insurance premiums.

Bike security:

Bike security means the measures you take to secure your bike against thefts and other dangers. This means that there should be an ideal location for keeping your bike. Depending on the kind of locks you use, the premium may be reduced or increased accordingly.

Most important out of these factors however is the chances and possibilities of theft or damage. In order to convince your insurer, you should convince him of the following precautions being taken on your part.

- Keeping your bike in a garage that is accessible to you readily and is secured well.

- If you do not have a garage to store your bike, a spot around your house that is well lit.

- Locks used to secure your bike have to be premium grade.

Bike insurance used for commercial purposes

If you have a fleet of bikes that you own, it will be advisable that you determine the factors that are taken into consideration while determining premiums. In the case of bikes used for commercial purposes, there are a number of determining factors against rough handling and accidents. If you want lower premiums on your bikes, you might want to:

- Fit a system into each of your bikes which will not only determine its safety, but also a tracking system regulating its speed,

- Ask for a discount on the entire fleet of bikes

- Have a premise or a space inside your company for their placement and competent security systems that will reduce the incidents of theft.

- Ensure the standardisation of all bikes. This will mean that there should not be any sort of additional accessorising as this will increase the premium of the bike.

When you buy bike insurance, it helps to determine your own needs first and then take a look at the offers on display. This means doing your homework on the different offers that insurance companies provide you and choosing the one that suits you best.
