Recent reports have been suggesting that more people are switching from cars to motorbikes in an attempt to save money. unfortunately this could well mean that there are a lot more motorbike users on the roads who have little or no experience when it comes to riding and taking care of a bike. Lots of essential maintenance such as oil changes and tyre maintenance are essential to keep any bike running properly and unfortunately those with little experience may not know what to do. This could be dangerous, not only putting the rider at risk, but also those around him or her. Furthermore, research has shown that those who maintain their vehicle properly will get better bike insurance premiums in the future.
Recent research carried out by Swinton insurers only goes further to highlight the need to maintain a motor bike. The survey of 1000 insurance customers revealed that 78% had put off 'minor and cosmetic' repairs such as dents and scratches in the last twelve months, with a further 22% admitting they would wait until their next MOT to discover the significance of 'uncharacteristic' engine noises and squeaks.
According to the insurer, there are three main procedures which are commonly overlooked by bike riders across the country, these are....
•Failing to replace worn or damaged tyres. This is not only dangerous but illegal and can lead to a fine and even points added to a licence.
•Bikers riding with a chain that needs replacing. This can cause poor performance and increased fuel consumption. There is also a risk that the chain will come off the sprockets which can cause extensive damage to the bike.
•Failing to keep oil levels topped up. This can permanently damage a bike's engine, easily avoided by regular checks and top-ups.
If bike riders check these three things on a regular basis then the risk of being involved in an accident is greatly reduced thus keeping bike insurance premiums low. Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bike Insurance said: "The credit crunch and fuel prices have had a big impact of motorists recently and keeping a bike in tip-top condition could be far less of a priority than it was twelve months ago. However some people's cost cutting could cost them dear in the long run both in terms of a bigger maintenance bill and an increased risk of having an accident."
"We strongly advise all bikers to ensure their motorcycle is 100% safe and roadworthy at all times and we want to highlight that putting off even a small repair now could be a false economy longer term."
The same insurance company inspired by recent photos of Justin Timberlake on a Harley Davidson has been inspired to compile the nations favourite Hollywood motorbike moments. Unsurprisingly, Steve McQueen's infamous escape on a Triumph TT Special 650 cc topped the list, this is how the top five looked according to Swinton customers.
