Britons planning to travel with their cars abroad on holiday have been advised to check their car insurance policy.
This advice followed the discovery by Moneysupermarket.com that 39 per cent of drivers did not know that while abroad their car insurance cover often changes. In some cases comprehensive cover could be downgraded to third-party policy when driving in other EU countries.
Moneysupermarket.com’s Richard Mason reminded those who are not happy driving with third-party policy while abroad to pay to upgrade their cover, although he said some drivers may be happy having third-party cover.
“A crash is a horrible experience, but being abroad, not speaking the local dialect, and finding yourself uninsured, could turn your idyllic break into a holiday from hell,” he said.
Automatically, it was found, five of UK’s biggest car insurers downgrade cover when their policyholder is driving in a foreign country.
The AA urges motorists to make sure they get prepared to drive abroad by having with them essential equipment and change for European toll charges.
In another development, holidaymakers going abroad more than three times in a year have been advised to take out annual travel insurance policy.
This, according to Moneysupermarket.com’s Peter Gerrard, will save them money as annual travel insurance has dropped in price in recent years. It’s more beneficial than paying for a single-trip policy.
“Annual policies are so cheap now. Before they used to be a couple of hundred pounds, but now you can get an annual policy for an individual just going to Europe for just over £30,” he explained.
