New car owners should shop around for car insurance, industry experts have advised. Recent research from website uSwitch has found consumers who had just bought a new vehicle are likely to get a lower priced insurance premium than that offered with the car.
Statistics show that customers could knock 10 per cent of their premium if they contacted the same policy provider that the seller suggests. This amounts to a £30 saving.Premiums could be reduced by a further 26 per cent if the customer shopped around and compared policies.
Ashton Berkhauer, from uSwitch.com, said: "Motorists tempted to opt for 'on the spot' manufacturer insurance must be warned that unless they are getting a full year for free they will be paying more than they need to for their cover."
Mr Berkhauer advises car owners to consider car insurance policies from manufacturers that provide a year's free coverage.
He warns that the small print should be checked so the consumer is aware of the extent of coverage and the excess, for instance, is not unreasonable.
