Car Insurance - Fuel poverty failure - 29/03/2008

The government’s own advisors have shot at them saying that their policies have made it impossible to combat fuel poverty, as promised, by 2010.

The Fuel Poverty Advisory Group has said that, despite progress made, more should be done to help those in financial hardship. Many people will struggle next winter as the cost of living increases with pricier home and car insurance and ever increasing property values.

Ministers have admitted to failing to meet targets with 1.2 million people still facing a struggle to cover energy costs.

"The increase in energy prices has made the fuel poverty targets much more challenging," the group said in its sixth annual report.

"However, the government's policies over a period have now made it impossible to meet the 2010 target and this will result in a shortfall, greater than necessary.

"The government has recently taken some important steps, but has not yet in our judgement done everything which is reasonably practicable to meet the targets."
