Modifying your car can affect your insurance - 22/04/2008

Making modifications to cars has been made popular by recent television shows such as Pimp My Ride. However making some modifications to your car is going to cost you money with your insurer.
Installing a spoiler or tinted windows may increase the cost of your car insurance premiums as your insurer may view the modifications as dangerous. If you make modifications to your car and fail to tell your insurer you could find that they refuse to pay out in the event of a claim.
However not all modifications will increase your insurance premiums. In fact some could even lower the amount you are paying! Having security features installed will make your car less attractive to thieves and decrease the risk of insuring your car.
This could lead to reduced payments, but you need to ensure that the security features are industry standard and properly fitted.
