Fifteen percent of British motorists admit to breaking the law by driving without car insurance, risking a hefty fine and points on their licence. These irresponsible drivers also push up the cost of insurance for law-abiding motorists.
A survey of 2,001 adults carried out by moneysupermarket.com found that 9% of drivers have driven someonelse’s car without cover and 6% have driven their own car without insurance. Men (21%) and young drivers (23%) are the worst offenders.
"Anyone who drives without insurance, no matter how short the distance and whether it's their car or someone else's, is breaking the law,” comments Richard Mason, Director of Insurance at moneysupermarket.com. “Not only that, but it costs the insurance industry over £500 million each year in claims, which drives up the cost of insurance for responsible motorists.”
Although the cost of insuring a car can be high, particularly for young male drivers, there is a high price to pay if you are caught driving without cover. Uninsured drivers can be fined up to £200 on-the-spot and receive six points on their licence. Their car can also be impounded.
