Car Insurance - Over a million admit to driving without car insurance - 15/05/2008

Over one million motorists have driven a car without insurance within the last year, according to new research by Sainsbury’s Car Insurance.

A total of 1.15 million admitted to the crime in the survey which found that the worst offenders were in the 17-24 age-group. On the opposite end of the scale, motorists over the age of 65 were least likely to step behind the wheel without car insurance cover.

Of those that admitted to driving insured, one-in-five claimed they couldn’t afford the cover, a further one-in-five said they believed it was unnecessary, 13 percent said they forgot to buy it and another 13 percent claimed they were too busy.

It was discovered that Londoners were the worst offenders whereas motorists in the South East, East Midlands & Anglia and West Midlands were the most responsible with only one percent of drivers in those areas driving without cover.

Uninsured drivers in the UK add around £30 to the cost of the average annual insurance policy according to statistics from the Association of British Insurers.
