Car Insurance - Winter warnings for drivers - 05/03/2008

Motor accidents swiftly rise in January thanks to cold weather and icy roads, February is not far behind though, according to Moneysupermarket.com
As well as the heightened risk of accidents thanks to treacherous driving conditions a new threat, known as ‘frosting’ has emerged, this is when thieves target motorists who turn on their engines to help to de-ice their windscreen and warm the car up. This is a danger for both car owners and cheap car insurance companies.

Sainsbury’s Bank car insurance spokes-women Joanne Mallon said: “When it’s freezing outside it can be tempting to leave the engine running to speed up the defrosting process while you nip back inside to get ready. But this can have terrible consequences if your car gets stolen.”

Insurers are not proving too keen to pay out on ‘frosting’ victim’s claims because of a breached duty of care in paying attention to the security of your car at all times. Steamed windows are another winter danger motorists face, winter is one of the most dangerous times for motorists and expensive times for insurers.
