Car Insurance - Younger Drivers Pay More For Car Insurance - 18/03/2008

A comparison of what Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe pays for his car insurance annually to what rocker Peter Doherty pays reveals that the former pays four times more than the latter.

The price comparison was done by Confused.com to illustrate how younger drivers with clean licences are penalised, reports said.

18-year-old Radcliffe, despite having a clean driving licence, pays up to 367 per cent more than Doherty, who has a string of drug and car offences. In some policies, however, the figure shoots up to a 505 per cent difference, the report added.

Confused.com revealed that Radcliffe registered his Fiat Punto at his residence in Fulham, West London, while Doherty, 29, registered his Jaguar X-Type at his Wiltshire home, and that based on this their annual car insurance quotes differed by about £3,451.69 in some cases.

Managing director of Confused.com, Debra Williams said it is frustrating that Daniel, in spite owning a modest car and living a clean lifestyle is expected to pay a higher price for his car insurance just because of his age and where he lives.

In contrast, she said Doherty, who lives a rock ’n’ roll lifestyle, has strings of convictions and owns a swanky Jaguar X-Type, pays an average £2,690 a year cheaper car insurance than his much younger celebrity counterpart, just because he is nearly ten years older.

“Daniel needs to avoid falling foul of typical teenage misdemeanours, such as speeding and driving without due care and attention,” said Ms Williams, adding that by keeping his licence clean and making sure he builds up his no claims bonus, he will surely reap the benefits in the next few years.

Younger drivers are generally considered high risks drivers and have to pay extra premium. Statistics suggest they are likely to make more claims and are easily prone to motoring penalties.
