A Conservative MP has blasted the court system after Government figures revealed up to two million cars have not been insured.
The statistics from the Home Office show that this means one in 15 drivers are not protected despite causing approximately 375,000 accidents per year.
Motorists caught driving illegally are fined £47 less in 2005 than they were 8 years previously.David Ruffley, shadow minister for police reform, said: "Uninsured drivers are the scourge of the roads.
Driving uninsured is often a sign of more serious criminality but amazingly the courts are passing derisory penalties. What are they thinking?"Mr Ruffley highlights figures from the Association of British Insurers which reveal drivers without car insurance are six times more likely to have a vehicle in an unroadworthy condition.
Furthermore uninsured motorists are ten times more likely to have been convicted of drink-driving.
"On top of that, the cost of uninsured drivers adds an extra £25 to £30 to the average annual car insurance premium," adds Mr Ruffley.
