Car Insurance - Research reveals how car parking can affect your car insurance premiums - 18/04/2008

Want to save between 7 and 35% on your car insurance premiums? Then pay attention to where you park. Street sense tells the average motorist that the most dangerous places to park their car would be in public multi-storey car parks.

But recent research from AA Personal Loans has shown that your car is more likely to be vandalised in a residential street than in a supermarket car park. About twice as likely in fact. Even more surprising, your car is about three times more likely to be vandalised in a residential street than in a multi-story car park.

Vandalism is frustrating for many motorists, but it is also very expensive, hitting insurance premiums especially hard in some cases.

If you live in the city, keeping your car in a garage overnight may save you up to 35% on your car insurance. If you live in a rural area you can save 7% on your insurance.

Tony Chilcott, a spokesperson for Direct Line, stated that “The likelihood of your car being vandalised rises significantly if it is left unattended for five hours or more. However, for the majority of people this is unavoidable due to long days in the office or being away from home.”

If you don’t have access to a garage the next safest place to park according to the AA research is in a school, hospital or airport parking lot.
