Over a third of a million motorists have driven without car insurance in the last year according to a new survey by comparison website, MoneyExpert.com.
Around 350’000 have people got the behind the wheel of a vehicle without the proper insurance cover with younger drivers aged between 18 and 24 making up over a third of that figure.
The study revealed that almost half of the culprits said they had failed to realise that their motor insurance had expired and 11 percent said they had driven somebody else’s car in an emergency. A similar figure admitted to deliberately driving without insurance.
The Motor Insurer’s Bureau has estimated that uninsured drivers are adding £30 to the average yearly insurance premium in Britain.
“It’s a real worry that many people persist in driving without insurance. They are putting the personal and financial security of others at risk,” said a spokesperson for MoneyExpert.com.
