As people in the UK now fancy driving abroad and are likely to drive during this bank holiday, they are being reminded to ensure they have the appropriate car insurance before heading off.
A comprehensive car insurance policy in the UK may not give the same cover when using car abroad, they were further told.
This advice was given by Defaqto after it analysed its Aequos database to see what cover was given for foreign use by the comprehensive car insurance market.
21 per cent of car insurance policies available, it said, do not provide comprehensive foreign use cover and that standard and extra cost would be payable to get comprehensive cover.
But while most insurers give cover as standard, 33 per cent allow a maximum of 60 days or less free cover abroad in the policy. The remaining 46 per cent of the comprehensive car insurance market will provide about 90 days or more free cover.
Consultant for General Insurance at Defaqto, Mike Powell said that most policyholders conclude that by having a comprehensive car insurance policy they would be provided with the same cover when driving abroad. But he said that was usually not the case.
“You need to check with your insurer to confirm cover is provided before you travel. Even if cover is given, policyholders should always inform their insurer of a trip abroad as this often forms part of the policy terms and conditions,” he said.
Meanwhile, a new study by Moneysupermarket.com has revealed that Kwik-Fit and Swiftcover are the most comprehensive car insurance providers.
In the same vein Endsleigh was rated the biggest improver, climbing from 47th to the 6th most competitive provider.
