Car Insurance - Young drivers forget Pass Plus look for cheap insurance - 09/06/2008

Experts claim that young drivers would benefit more from actively searching for cheap car insurance, rather than taking any advanced driving test. The Pass Plus test introduced by the Government’s driving standards agency, is about £180 for a six hour course on the road and is promoted as a strategy for new drivers to reduce the cost of their insurance cover.

Approximately 15 insurers of present, which include Zurich, Swinton, Churchill and Norwich Union, are currently offering discounts that range between 5 and 35% to drivers who pass with this certificate. Although the course which has to be taken within 12 months of passing the driving test may make young drivers more careful, research confirms that it does not necessarily mean cheaper premiums.

For example an 18 year old male student from Bramhope Leeds, is driving a Ford Fiesta which costs £1,500 parked off road in a garage, would pay £3,448 for third party cover with Swinton, bear in mind that this type of insurance cover only covers the damage to other vehicles.

If the driver happened to possess a Pass Plus certificate, Swinton would reduce the premium to £2,948. However that same driver could ignore the pass plus scheme and pay £2,890 with Admiral insurance for fully comprehensive cover for 10 months.
