Motorists caught eating behind the wheel may see their car insurance premium increase by 40 per cent, it has been revealed.
According to a number of insurers, the insurance premiums for those found eating and even listening to loud music whilst driving can rise by up to £200 more.
As the Government cracks down on careless driving, insurers are acting harder on its careless motorists.
Some insurance firms stated that some drivers who have been caught distracting themselves by tuning their radio, sipping on a bottle of water, eating or arguing with a passenger have been refused cover altogether.
Neil Walker of Allianz said: “Drivers with convictions represent an increased risk and will not be able to access the best premiums. We assess each inquiry, taking into account risk indicators including previous claims and convictions, and the driver’s age and experience.”
Spokesperson Ian Crowder, of AA Insurance said: “We’re all guilty of eating or drinking behind the wheel but the fact is it can be dangerous.
There is a direct correlation between those convicted of driving without due care and attention and fatal accidents.
Insurance is a very black-and-white issue and the job of insurers is identifying customers who pose as possible risks. The cynical will say it is just a money-making scheme but its financial incentive to encourage drivers to be more careful.”
