Motor insurance policies do not cover the provisions of road rage attacks, according to a well know car insurance provider.
Sainsbury’s Car Insurance states that a large number of insurance policies for vehicles on offer in the UK, do not provide specific provisions, if a policyholder becomes a victim of road rage attack.
Figures from Sainsbury’s revealed that 58 per cent of drivers have been victims of road rage in the past 12 months. Thirty-three thousand motorists were found to have been physically assaulted during the road rage attacks.
Top reasons for road rage attacks were cited as tailgating, a car wrongfully pulling out at a junction and changing lanes without indicating.
Carjacking was also said to be a key trigger, with around 265,000 motorists having suffered from such an incident. Carjacking is when a car is broken into, while the driver is still in the vehicle. On a positive note, a further 262,000 motorists have been victims of carjacking, which were unsuccessful.
Joanne Mallon, the manager of Sainsbury’s Car, said: "A worrying number of motorists have unfortunately suffered from road rage or carjacking and the result can be both mentally and physically scarring for the victims. It's important that these victims aren't left high and dry."
