Motorists have been comforted this week, after being told that they will not lose access to cheap comprehensive car insurance if they buy an electric or hybrid vehicle.

According to a financial company, the cost of policies to protect these types of green vehicles is about the same as the price of cover for standard models.

The firm pointed out that drivers opting to purchase greener cars, could save money in other areas. It explained that there are certain tax benefits to owning environmentally-friendly motors. For example, excise duty is lower for such models, with some cars being completely exempt.

Research by the company revealed that 39% of UK motorists are willing to swop their car for a green model.

Spokesman Steve Sweeney commented: “It is encouraging to see so many motorists are conscious of their carbon footprint and are looking for ways to make a difference.”
