The lack of clean facilities at NHS hospitals is driving 2 out of 3 people to buy private health insurance.
Findings from a new study have revealed that the British public is dissatisfied with the cleanliness of NHS hospitals, the lengthy waiting times and the poor reputation of individual facilities. In particular, concern over contracting superbugs means more people are likely to want to receive their treatment in a private hospital due to the fact that they look after a smaller number of patients. Five thousand people die from hospital-acquired infection a year, and it contributes to the death of a further 15,000.
The recent survey was carried out by research company TNS and was conducted online and the backlash against NHS hospitals showed a clear preference towards going private. 80% of people felt that hospital managers were to blame for the spread of infections, much more so than the cleaners.
On the other hand, private hospitals cater for a significantly lower number of patients and due to the funding and different financial set-up, it is arguable that their regulations are a lot stricter as the losses and monetary consequences are felt a lot closer to home.
