More Americans are losing their employee health insurance cover as the rate of unemployment in America increases further.
And with there already being enough problems with the American health care system as it is, the number of Americans without health insurance is increasing incredibly.
As a result, an American drugstore operation has announced that it will be offering free clinic visits to those without health insurance.
Free visits for the unemployed and uninsured
One of the biggest US pharmacy chains, Walgreen Co, and its Take Care Health Systems has revealed that it will be providing free tests and treatment for those who have lost their jobs and health insurance after March 31st.
Other Americans, such as children, domestic partners and spouses would also be entitled to the offer providing that they do not have health insurance cover.
The firm stated that unemployed Americans and those without insurance will benefit from receiving free healthcare treatment in its 300 walk-in clinics across America.
Hal Rosenbluth, president of Walgreens’ health and wellness division and chairman of Take Care Health Systems said: “Walgreens and Take Care Health Systems strongly believe that a family’s health care needs should not take a backseat to the economy.”
“Take Care Clinics were founded on the principle of providing patient-focused care and doing all that they can to help every patient in the communities they serve.”
The move includes treatment for respiratory problems, for example, colds, sinus infections, bronchitis and a sore throat, skin conditions like infections, burns, and dry skin, and common conditions such as seasonal allergies.
However, the firm stated that free prescriptions, checkups, vaccinations or injections will not be provided to its patients at the Take Care clinics.
Despite this, the move is expected to reveal a positive outcome for the healthcare services.
However, Rosenbluth stated that the move is currently experimental as Walgreen is unaware of how many patients they will see and how much the service would cost the firm.
Positive for Americans, but what about the firm?
According to Walgreen, the move will generate greater attention for its 341 clinics and will attract more customers.
Last week, the US Labor Department stated that the number of workers receiving state unemployment benefits had increased to a record 5.56 million.
And, with Americas growing rate of unemployment together with more Americans losing their healthcare cover, the cost of the free service from Walgreen is expected to rise.
According to Pali Research analyst, Robert Summers, the move is "a rather expensive way to drive awareness of the company's in-store healthcare clinics."
The move will take place until the end of the year with its free services being offered from 11am to 3pm Monday-Friday at its 341 Take Care clinics across America.
