Those refusing to take out compulsory health insurance in the Netherlands will soon be facing the wrath of the government, it has been announced.
Health minister, Ab Klink said they have planned a clampdown on people evading the purchase of the cover.
Every adult in the Netherlands is legally required to take out a basic health insurance package with a private health insurer of his or her choice.
But children are insured free of charge on their parents’ policy.
A number of additional packages are also available to those who choose to pay an extra premium for the add-ons.
Based on the proposal those who fail to purchase the policy will first receive a warning and if they still do not comply they will have a fine imposed on them.
A further failure to comply will result in a cover taken out in their name and the premium will be deducted directly from the earnings or state benefits.
