Level of cover needed.

There are three main levels of health insurance cover available; critical illness insurance, private medical insurance and income protection.
Critical illness cover will protect you if you are diagnosed with a serious or life threatening illness and will pay out a lump sum to cover medical costs and income that is lost.
Private medical insurance covers the cost of medical treatment which is not through the NHS.
Income protection covers up to 65% of any previous income if you are unable to work due to accident or sickness.
The level of cover you require will affect the price of your premium, it is therefore important to only cover yourself for what is necessary.

Special policies available.

Most insurers will offer group or family policies which can make huge monetary savings, if you and your partner each have a separate policy you should look into the cost of a joint policy to save money.

Using Only Insurance.

Shopping around for the best quote can save people a lot of money, Only Insurance will search the health insurance market and present you with the best price, policy and package for you. This advice is not only aimed at people looking for a new policy but those who have existing health insurance policies.

Keeping healthy.

The cost of your insurance premium is based largely on risk, an unhealthy lifestyle will mean your health insurance policy will cost you more. Insurers will penalise smokers and the overweight, as these groups are more likely to claim on their policies.
Smokers should consider quitting and the overweight should consider a healthier lifestyle to keep their policy costs down. Many health insurance policies offer free gym memberships to encourage their customers to have a healthy lifestyle.

Not just for the old.

The younger and healthier you are, the more important it is that you take out a health insurance policy now. You will get a better and most importantly, cheaper policy as you will be considered as low risk by your insurer. This can mean you save substantially on your health insurance over your life.
