Make sure you have adequate home insurance in place before attempting to create the mouthwatering dishes that celebrity chefs tempt us all with. The rise in popularity of TV cooking programmes has led to an increase in kitchen disasters.
According to esure Home Insurance, 6.1 million people were involved in cooking mishaps in 2006, as they tried to emulate tricky techniques demonstrated by TV chefs. It says more than one in ten (14%) people in the UK have had a cooking accident or caused damage to their kitchen as a result of copying cooking techniques, from shows such as Saturday Kitchen and Great British Menu. According to the Office for National Statistics the average kitchen disaster costs £247. Esure says this equates to a total of £5 billion worth of damage to UK homes.
"The kitchen is one of the most dangerous rooms in a house, but adding a budding home cook and a technical recipe can make the likelihood of having an accident soar,” says Mike Pickard, Head of Home Insurance for esure. “Having ample buildings and contents insurance plus accidental damage cover, to foot the bill of any kitchen mishaps, is definitely worthwhile."
Chopping, frying, steaming, tenderising and skewering are all potentially dangerous. So before you whip up that Crème Brulee, make sure you have adequate home insurance in place to cover yourself, your equipment and your entire kitchen from any potential culinary disasters.
