Up to one in ten British people do not have home contents insurance, according to a recent survey.
Statistics from Sainsbury's Home Insurance has shown that nearly five million Brits do not have a policy to cover their belongings.
The least likely to have home contents insurance were those living in London where just 22 per cent of people had policies. A further five per cent of this group were unaware if they were insured or not.
People living in Yorkshire and Humberside were most likely to cover their belongings with 96 per cent having a home contents insurance policy.
The most common reason for not being covered was that people believed it was not necessary and 14 per cent said it was unaffordable.
Neil Laird, manager of Sainsbury's home insurance, highlighted that policies are not necessarily expensive.
"You can spread the cost over the course of a year and some insurers, including ourselves, will not charge for this. There are also some great discounts on cover available at the moment," he added.
