Open plan living can affect home insurance - 05/03/2008

Experts should be used to undertake any major building work in their homes according to Halifax. The company has revealed that 25% of homeowners take the risk of voiding their home insurance by knocking down walls to create open-plan living arrangements.
This is a concerning statistic because damage caused to the property by the owner is unlikely to be covered in their home insurance policy. Head of underwriting at Halifax, David Rochester said: "Not only do we urge homeowners to make sure a qualified person carries out any structural work to their home, we also recommend seeking the advice of a qualified structural engineer before progressing work to knock down any walls."
Any damage such as collapsing ceilings or other common problems will also invalidate an insurance policy, it is a good idea to check with your insurer what you are covered for before taking on any work.
