Home Insurance - Homeowners Urged To Use Lock and Key - 11/05/2008

A leading insurance company has warned that many insurance policies may be rendered invalid through lax security amid growing fears of summer burglaries.

A report published by two of the UK’s largest insurance companies, esure Home Insurance and Confused .com have stated that thieves have begun targeting expensive extensions to the homes such as garages, gardens and lofts, areas which are often not properly secured.

The study found that almost 650,000 UK households have had furniture stolen from their gardens last year. Significantly many of these examples feature items that were left out overnight and not protected via lock and key, which could mean their home insurance policy would be nothing more than writing on a paper.

Head of risk and underwriting, Mike Pickard, said: ‘‘Household items are now being stored outdoors, blurring the distinction between home contents and outbuilding and garden contents. Homeowners should check the limits of their insurance policies because some are relatively low and in the event of an ‘outdoor' theft not everything may be covered if your shed is bulging with valuables."

In an attempt to advise it’s clients Confused.com have urged clients to ensure that windows and doors are locked when not present in a room as anything that could be construed as the client’s fault may result in non-payment. Any security measures put in place i.e. alarm system, must be fully up to date and all items left unattended items must be put away at night.
