Property Owners Told to Check Insurance Policies - 02/06/2008 |

As home and business owners assess the damage caused by last week’s flash floods that hit some parts of the UK for the second year running, experts are warning people to check their home insurance policies.
The Association of British Insurance, over the weekend, issued the advice to property owners who were affected following the flash floods in the West Country.
It warned that damage caused to homes and business premises after major flooding can be extensive with renovation costs amassing to hundreds of thousands of pounds.
The floods, which hit the south west’s first festival of the year Thursday night, led to the cancellation of Sunrise festival in Somerset.
Fire fighters in Somerset battled against the floods as they reportedly described it their busiest night in living history.
Most homes were evacuated in the worst affected areas of Somerset, reminding people of the floods disaster of last year.
Those whose properties have been affected, the ABI said, should contact their insurer as soon as possible and avoid using electricity and water supplies until the all clear has been given.
It also advised property owners to take photographs of the damage before claiming on their home insurance.
Director of general insurance, Nick Starling said: “These events highlight just how important insurance protection is. If you have been affected by flooding, contact your insurance company. Their priority is to deal with all claims as quickly as possible.”
Direct Line Home Insurance has also deployed more than 100 members of its emergency response team in the areas worst hit to offer assistance to those whose homes and businesses were affected.
Head of home insurance at Direct Line, Andrew Lowe explained that their main priority was to help people get back to normal as quickly as possible and with as less inconvenience as possible.
