For the second year in a row, areas of Britain have been hit by devastating flash floods. Many have been shocked to find that their home insurance does not cover them for this destructive natural disaster.
The floods affected the south west, with somerset particularly badly hit. Many homes were evacuated and the first festival of the season, the Sunrise festival was cancelled as a result of the flooding.
The Association of British Insurers is offering advice to homeowners as to how to claim on their home insurance if they have been affected by the floods and what to do if they are not covered.
They recommend contacting home insurers as soon as possible as well as taking photos of the flood damage and avoiding further disaster by turning off all electric and water supplies until given the all clear.
General insurance director at ABI, Nick Starling, said: “These events highlight just how important insurance protection is, If you have been affected by flooding, contact your insurance company. Their priority is to deal with all claims as quickly as possible.”
Direct Line insurance have employed over 100 additional staff in areas worst hit to deal with the disaster.
Head of Insurance at Direct Line, Andrew Lowe said: “Our main priority is to help people get back to normal as quickly as possible and with the least amount of inconvenience.
"Additional staff are on stand-by to help customers who have been affected by the recent flooding in the south west region.”
