Households in the UK planning to make their homes entertainment centre for hosting a ‘night in’ have been advised to consider the level of their home insurance protection before doing so.
This is because the event might end up being a nightmare if things were to go wrong.
And people would be left disappointed if they were to make claim for accidental mishaps.
Giving the advice, Greenbee.com said there are just 28 out of 259 home contents products currently on offer that include accidental damage, like a red wine spillage on the sofa, as standard.
It also reminded that people should take the issue of the insurance cover they get more seriously, as only about eight out of 10 are insured, even as four-in-ten claims on Greenbee home insurance are for accidental damage/accidental loss.
Further research revealed that 38 per cent of people see their homes as an open expression of themselves, while 13 per cent consider it a gallery for show off.
This is particularly the case with people in East Midlands and South West, who take pride in their possessions, with 19 per cent thinking of exhibiting their prized possessions. This is compared to only seven per cent of those from the South East.
But for some homeowners, it was found, the home has little sentimental value, with 29 per cent feeling it is just what it is – a place to sleep and eat. On the contrary, 13 per cent consider their home an office, with those from South East most likely to work from home.
Managing director of Greenbee.com, James Furse, said that although people assume that mishaps like party accidents would be covered as standard, it is usually not the case.
He therefore urged homeowners to ensure their prized items are covered by their home insurance.
