Home Insurance - Homeowners making bio diesel told to be cautious - 06/08/2008

Homeowners planning to produce their own bio diesel from cooking oil have been reminded of the need to ensure they take great care not to invalidate their home insurance policy.

The advice comes as many people in the UK are, in a bid to drive down cost, trying to make their own fuel.

In some cases the attempt was said to have ended on a ghastly note, leaving the homeowner with injuries and damage caused to their property.

People are therefore reminded that most insurance policies would require them to be reasonably cautious, even as they keep every insured property in a state of repair.

“The dangers of producing your own bio diesel are very high, for some people the savings to be made are very enticing. If you are intending to manufacture your own bio diesel, you should check with your home insurer to confirm that cover will be provided against any damage caused to your home,” said Consultant for General Insurance at Defaqto, Mike Powell.

He added that people could be quite shocked to know after an accident that they would have to foot the repair cost as it could very expensive.
