Halifax home insurers have warned that some customers may been for a shock if there house was ever to be hit by lightening.

It may be the last thing many people think of when taking out a home insurance policy but with the more tropical like storms the U.K has been experiencing of late, homes being hit by lightning is become more and more common.

Lightning damage can affect your home in several different ways including, fire, structural damage and damage to electrical equipment such as P.C and televisions. The average claim for lightning damage is £1,453 meaning home owners without the right cover could be left seriously out of pocket.

The Met office offers up a few simple pieces of advice to help reduce any damage to your home if the unexpected was to happen. They advise to unplug all non essential electronic equipment such as T.Vs and computers as lightening can cause unexpected power surges.

It is important to remember that lightning can strike anywhere at any time so it is important to double check you are covered or you could be left out of pocket.
