Insurance company Saga has unveiled a survival guide for students, advising them on how to reduce the risk of being burgled.
The insurer says the compiled guide targeted at university students was done with the help of the police, Home Office and National Union of Students. Saga says that students can also find information that would enable them carry out a security check when looking for accommodation.
In a recent survey, M&S Money revealed that the contents of the average student bedroom are worth £1,650, with £718 of that going on electrical gadgets and appliances. However, students whose parents have one of the 11 home insurance policies that caps student claims at £1,000, will end up with a deficit of at least £650 which results in the gadgets not replaced.
According to Home Office statistics, one in three students at university are victims of crime and that nationally approximately a quarter of robberies are through a window or door that has not been properly secured.
Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive of Saga Group said: "For many students, making new friends and socialising will be high on their agenda with security barely even registering on the list."
Insurance provider Saga says that one in ten people in the UK live in a home at "serious" risk of flooding with 57% of men having home insurance compared to 64% of women.
