The risk of having a fire at home during the winter is greater than at any other time of the year according to research from the insurance provider, More Th>n.
The home insurance provider also added that there was a sharp jump in the number of house fires reported on Christmas day last year.
The company disclosed that most of the cases initiated from ovens or when candles were left burning with materials around them, such as curtains or Christmas decorations. They stated that people can become too relaxed on Christmas Day and have their attention on other things, which can increase the chance of a catastrophe taking place.
The company's head of home insurance Keith Maxwell, said: "Amidst the celebrations of Christmas Day, More Th>n is urging people to be cautious as the nightmare scenario of a Christmas in flames can occur."
The insurance provider advised homeowners to protect themselves this Christmas, by making sure that the oven is not left unattended and switched off when the cooking is completed. In addition, keeping decorations away from any source of heat, that could set it alight.
He also recommended that customers ensure that they have adequate cover for their properties, when he added: "For peace of mind, it is a good idea to make sure home insurance is up to date so that, should a fire take place, the home will be covered."
