The harsh winter spell has caused many pipe bursts across homes in Britain and home insurance policy.
According to Lloyds TSB the cost of repairing burst water pipes can be expensive, with the average repair costing from £1,400 and up to £40,000 to repair in extreme weather.
The insurer says that even in relatively mild winters experienced across Britain, many homeowners are unaware if they are insured against their pipes. Additionally, householders are urged to check that their pipes are insulated properly.
Lloyds TSB says that early preparation by homeowners to check that they are covered for the winter weather conditions would ensure a piece of mind. The insurance provider has recorded a 15 per cent increase in burst pipe claims and expects this figure to rise further as the freezing weather continues.
In order to avoid unnecessary damage, the insurer says that homeowners should insulate outside stand pipes, taps, lag pipes and tanks in their loft and clear leaves or debris trapped in drain gratings, gutters and down pipes.
Property owners can also locate their stopcock, gas valve and ball valves, to establish where they are and can access them easily if a problem occurs. Homes can also be protected by having heating appliances serviced and chimneys swept regularly
