Despite an increasing number of people either not having or cancelling their home insurance policy as they struggle with the recession, a new study shows that burglars are not letting go.
And students, according to the survey by an insurance firm, are top target for thieves.
Of the more than 1,800 surveyed it was found that two thirds, representing 68 per cent, still do not believe that they would be burgled or lose or damage their property while at university.
On the contrary government guidance statistically suggests that students are one of the most likely groups to be targeted in a crime, because they own more expensive goods per head than the rest of the population.
The Home Office guidance also revealed that one in three students are likely to become victims each year and they are most likely to be affected by burglary, mugging and car-related theft.
The poll found that more than half of students going to university this autumn will take up to £5,500 worth of possessions with them.
