A home insurance group has warned homeowners to take extra special care this Christmas when it comes to fire, as risks are so high.
The advice comes as people are getting in the festive mood preparing for the holiday period by purchasing candles and cooking.
The firm revealed that Christmas Day is a prime time for home claims because fire damage is set to rise at 180%.
The insurer witnessed a dramatic rise in the number of fire incidents reported, with most originating from the oven or candles catching light to surrounding materials. As such, the insurer says safety should be at the top of everyone's Christmas wish list.
Head of Home insurance at the firm, Annette Lepper, said: “Christmas Day is a time for enjoyment, friends and family. We would encourage homeowners to take a few simple precautions to make sure that you don't let a fire ruin your celebration.”
Homeowners have been recommended to not overload sockets, keep decorations away from heat and to carefully monitor food in the oven.
