A home insurance company has revealed that rural homeowners underestimate the crime risks they face.
A study carried out by the provider found that country dwellers are less security-aware than people residing in urban areas.
30% of rural home livers admitted to leaving their doors unlocked. This is alarming considering as 70% stated they do not have a burglar alarm, with 30% saying they do not see the point in such a device.
Commenting on the findings, Martin Foulds, a senior claims manager at Home Insurance, said: “Rural residents should be especially vigilant during this festive season, with burglars aware of the increased value of home contents nestled under the Christmas tree.”
Insurers have urged homeowners to purchase cover because the average Brit will spend £363 on ten gifts this year, with the majority of people storing their gifts in an unsecured place around the home.
