We are now in the summertime period even though some of the weather we have been experiencing may suggest otherwise. This is the time when the days begin to get warmer, as well as many of us heading straight for the great outdoors like a fish to water. You bring out the Barbecues, patio furniture and the mini play pools for the kids. But because of bringing out these instruments you have possibly attracted the attention of thieves.
Halifax Home Insurance have released figures that show that garden accessory theft increases by over 50% in summer months every year. Also as outdoor living has become more popular than it has ever been, the percentage of claims for the theft of outdoor garden items has also gone up by over 25%.
Outdoor accessories and furniture is more costly than what people actually realise, so the cost of replacing some chairs, a table and a grill, can accumulate fairly quickly. It seems to be that because it is outside, people are less likely to take precautions to protect their belongings, as they may feel that nobody is going to be bold enough to walk up and attempt to steal anything in broad day light.
However, contrary to that popular belief is that many of the thieves do exactly that, mainly in areas which see a smaller percentage of people at home on weekdays. Halifax research figures revealed that the average claim after a garden theft is about £679 in Bolton and Wigan which is high, to a low £116 in the Harlow area. These type of loses could be considered extremely high if you come to realise that your home contents policy, if you have one, does not cover some or all of it for that matter.
There are various ways in which you can protect your property from being infiltrated by garden thieves, which will ensure that your garden and property is safe and secure. First of all you can identify your belongings, put your postcode on any of your furniture or ornaments, that way if they are stolen it will be much easier to retrace them back to you. You can also take photos of the most valuable pieces, in the event of them being stolen or vandalised. Ensure all garden gates are locked, as well as sheds and garages to make it harder for thieves to gain access to you stuff.
