A major insurance provider has taken a bold step with the introduction of a home insurance policy, that aims to support homeowners, who have criminal convictions to their name.
The insurance service will provide cheaper premiums for those with minor criminal convictions. The insurer created the fast-response service because people with a criminal record can often face problems, when getting their homes insured.
The insurer also said that other issues make getting insurance cover even more difficult, such as even if they are accepted by an insurer, it sometimes takes a long time to receive a response.
The insurer stated that its service aims to turn around a quote in 24 hours and offer a cheaper service for people who have been convicted of minor criminal offences.
The insurer said that it will question potential customers with convictions to see how their lives have changed. Such questions will include asking whether they are in a settled relationship, if they have children, or if they currently have a job.
Julie Carter from the insurance firm said: "The stats show that people who have criminal convictions from when they were younger are a good risk - they have often turned over a new leaf. All these factors can influence not only our ability to offer cover, but also the actual cost of their home insurance."
Break in horrors
Continuing with the crime theme, it has been revealed that a new fear is gripping the nation - a dramatic rise in home crimes.
A study revealed that over four million UK homeowners admit that they are expecting their homes to be broken into this year, at any minute.
The new panic-pandemic adds to the country's list of worries such as unemployment, the recession and swine flu. It appears that we are a nation of worries.
Figures revealed show that one in ten Brits expect to be burgled this year, with the Welsh population reaching the top worry spot at 12%, joined by those living in Yorkshire also at 12%. Londoners came in third place, with 11% fearful of home crime.
Worse still, is that over a quarter of homeowners live in fear of an intruder entering their home. This panic has become all the more true, with the recession sparking a new wave of criminal activities.
However, despite realising their woes, millions of property owners still leave their homes unlocked or lack basic security devices.
A third of UK homes have inadequate front door locks, while many homeowners are admitting that they have little or no home insurance cover.
Pete Markey, from the insurance firm which conducted the investigation stated: "The last thing Britain needs at the moment is something else to worry about, but it's no wonder that people are growing more aware of the threats they face on a daily basis. But rather than focussing on the negatives, Brits need to take the initiative and do all they can to ensure their homes are protected."
He added: "Obviously we'd urge everyone to have a think about what home security measures they can put in place, but the most important thing to do is make sure your home insurance is up to date and covers all your possessions. That way, at least if the worst happens you won't be left to pick up the pieces on your own."
