Life Insurance - How does alcohol affect my life insurance? - 05/05/2008

Life insurance provides your loved ones with a level of financial security in a number of instances, whether you are diagnosed with a chronic illness, no longer able to work or maybe you have taken advantage of the savings element of ‘whole life’ insurance and after crossing the threshold you are granted with a nice lump sum for you and your family.

Either way, the benefits of taking out life insurance are numerous and the negatives few if any can be found at all! With such a sales pitch is it any wonder that the number of policies taken out increases each year?

Unfortunately our current society views alcohol in a way that conflicts with the way insurance companies regard the subject matter. Rather than smiling at your inebriated escapades they are more inclined to frown at your frolics.

If you have had any problems with alcohol that have been noted on your medical records, even if by going to your GP you were pointed in the right direction to source the necessary help, the insurance company may still think you are a high risk customer and force you to pay higher rates.

The insurance company may request you have a liver function test otherwise known as a GGT which measures ‘irritation’ to the liver, an elevated liver function could indicate you are a heavy drinker in which case your application could be denied. To avoid potential denial, it is in your best interests to limit your liquor intake.
